Fire Service Engineer

Location: Stevenage

The Candidates can live within 30 miles of Stevenage

Salary: from £30,000 OTE £45,000 (minimum 5yrs experience) + benefits

The Company:

Our client is one of the originators of external / security lighting and after setting up a manufacturing facility to support sales and distribution they were soon involved in the design and installation of electronic security fire systems. They passionately believe that their success has been, and will continue to be, through their commitment to excellence and delivering a level of service unsurpassed in the industry.

They are now on the lookout for a suitability qualified and experienced Fire Service Engineer join their team in Stevenage.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • For the servicing and corrective maintenance of fire alarms, high sensitivity smoke sensing systems, voice alarms / public address systems, emergency lighting, nurse / warden / staff call systems, fire extinguishers, induction loops and other associated systems at their customers’ premises. You will be required to complete all documentation, in accordance with the appropriate British Standards requirements, Approval Bodies and Fire & Security documentation.

Minor Works and Call Outs:

  • You will be required to carry out minor installation work and correct faults, as required, at their customers’ premises. You will be required to complete all documentation, in accordance with the appropriate British Standards requirements, Approval Bodies and Fire & Security documentation.

Skills and Experience:

  • The Candidate must have a thorough technical knowledge of the following manufacturers' products: the Morley, C-Tec, Advanced, Kidde, Vesda, Apollo.

Areas covered:

  • Geographical Areas: Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, London, Middlesex, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire, Suffolk.
  • Preferred Areas: Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Northamptonshire, North London.
  • Normally they do no more than 10% work within Central London.
  • Their customer base is varied covering: domestic, retail, commercial, schools, care homes.  They do not work on railways or airports airside.

They offer:

  • £30,000 up OTE £45,000 (minimum 5yrs experience) + benefits
  • Basic Hours of Work:
  • Forty hours per week commencing at 08:30 with a 1/2 for lunch (Unpaid) each day to be taken between 12:00-14:00
  • The Candidate is expected to arrive on their Customer's site at 08:30 and not leave site before 17:00 unless other arrangements have been made for them.

Fire Normal Overtime Rates:

  • The Candidate may from time to time be required to work additional hours in order to meet the needs of the business. Non-call out overtime worked will be paid at the rates as follows:
  • Monday - Friday: basic rate of pay x 1.33 (Other than travelling)
  • Saturday: basic rate of pay x 1.5 (Other than travelling)
  • Sunday: basic rate of pay x 2 (Other than travelling)
  • Night Working: basic rate of pay x 1 (Other than travelling)
  • Travelling outside the normal eight-hour day: basic rate of pay x 1.

The basic overtime rates are subject to a maximum basic threshold per hour, this will be reviewed from time to time. If the Candidate’s basic overtime rate is lower than the maximum basic threshold per hour, then their lower basic rate will apply.

Fire Travelling Time Rates:

  • The Candidate will receive payment of their travelling from home to site in the mornings and from site to home in the evenings if this travelling time is over and above their normal straight eight hour day and will be paid at their basic rate. For example, if the Candidate leaves home at 06:00 and arrives on site at 08:30 they will receive 2½ hours overtime at the basic rate and if the Candidate leaves site at 17:30 and arrive home at 20:00 they will also receive 2½ hours overtime at the basic rate.
  • The Candidate will not get paid travelling time rates to travel from home to the office in the mornings or from the office to home in the evenings.

Fire Duty Roster:

  • It is recognised in the industry that it is "Custom and Practice" for a Duty Engineers' Roster to be in operation to provide the facility of emergency call outs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
  • The Candidate will be expected to be included on the Duty Engineers' Roster for emergency call outs which is usually one week in six.
  • On average, the engineers have around four out of hours call outs per week, but this is decreasing and having telephone conversations with their Customers.

Where the Candidate is on call, they are not permitted to consume any alcohol or non-prescribed drugs. The Fire Duty Engineer receives £214.00 per week, separate rates apply to bank and public holidays, plus premium rates during the following time bands:

Time Bands:

  • Weekdays 06:01 - 08:30 basic rate x 1½
  • 17:00 - 24:00 basic rate x 1½
  • 00:01 - 06:00 basic rate x 2
  • Weekends Saturday 00:01 - Monday 06:00 basic rate x 2
  • Bank and Public Holidays basic rate x 2
